Electric Trailer Brakes: How They Work and Their Key Components

Electric trailer brakes are a common and effective braking system used on many trailers. They function by converting electrical signals into mechanical force, allowing the trailer to slow down or stop in sync with the towing vehicle. This system relies on several interconnected components that work together to deliver smooth and responsive braking performance.

Main Components of Electric Trailer Brakes

1. Brake Controller

The brake controller is the central command unit of the electric braking system. It is typically mounted inside the towing vehicle’s cabin, within easy reach of the driver. This device detects when the driver applies the vehicle’s brakes and sends an appropriate electrical signal to the trailer’s brakes. Modern brake controllers can adjust the strength of the braking force based on how hard the driver presses the brake pedal, offering proportional braking for improved safety and control.

2. Brake Shoes

Brake shoes are curved friction materials mounted inside the brake drum assembly. When activated, they press outward against the inside surface of the brake drum or hub, generating the friction needed to slow down or stop the trailer. These components are subject to wear over time and require regular inspection and maintenance.

3. Brake Drums or Hubs

Brake drums, also known as hubs, are round, rotating components attached to the trailer’s wheels. They provide the surface against which the brake shoes press to create braking force. When the brake shoes expand outward into contact with the rotating drum, friction is produced, slowing the rotation of the wheels and thus the trailer.

4. Electromagnets

Electromagnets are essential to the function of electric trailer brakes. Located inside the drum, the magnets are energized by the signal from the brake controller. When activated, the magnet is attracted to the inner surface of the drum, pulling on a mechanical linkage called the actuating arm. This movement pushes the brake shoes into contact with the drum, initiating braking.

5. Wiring Harness

The wiring harness is the network of electrical wires that connects the brake controller in the tow vehicle to the trailer’s braking system. It also links other components, such as the breakaway switch and trailer battery. The harness ensures that electrical power and signals are properly distributed throughout the system.

Additional Components

  • Actuating Arm:
    This lever transmits the force from the magnet to the brake shoes, mechanically engaging the brakes when the magnet is activated.

  • Reactor Spring:
    After braking, the reactor spring helps return the brake shoes to their resting position, preventing them from dragging against the drum.

  • Adjuster Mechanism:
    The adjuster allows for fine-tuning of the brake shoes’ position relative to the drum, ensuring consistent performance and even wear.

Emergency Breakaway Kit

This safety feature automatically activates the trailer brakes if it becomes disconnected from the towing vehicle. It includes a breakaway switch, battery, and related wiring. When the switch is triggered, the battery sends power to the trailer brakes, bringing it to a controlled stop to prevent accidents.
